Living Lab EDGE-SANTÉ

A connected-sensor vigilance corridor for safe aging in place

The EDGE-SANTÉ Living Lab is a project currently in development, led by ZAP in discussion with the City of Sherbrooke and partners from the healthcare network. It proposes deploying, in the Arrondissement des Nations, a corridor of radar sensors installed on existing urban infrastructure (utility poles, traffic lights) to detect falls and provide discreet monitoring for seniors living at home.

Alongside the outdoor corridor, we are also seeking to establish in-building agreements with a CHSLD (long-term care facility) or a private seniors' residence (RPA), in order to deploy the same monitoring technology inside these facilities.

What the project proposes

​

Radar-based detection technology (mmWave), with no camera and no facial recognition — privacy by design, compliant with Quebec's Law 25. Data processed locally and hosted under full data sovereignty. Fall alerts sent to the relevant clinical teams, where a partnership has been confirmed.

Where the project stands

​

Discussions are continuing with the Research Centre on Aging of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie–CHUS and the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Sherbrooke (IUGS) on the scientific component. A proposed memorandum of understanding has been submitted to the City of Sherbrooke. We are also looking for a partner CHSLD or RPA for a first in-building deployment. Funding and timeline are still to be confirmed.
